Uluru Up Close

Jim Geiger and his camel, Smarty Pants, in the AUstralian outback.

I got up before dawn after a short night in my room. The bus picked us up at 6:00 a.m. for our trip to Uluru. As we got closer its vast shape began to faintly appear on the horizon. Our guide, Georgia, stopped at her favorite place and set up coffee and breakfast for us. It was pretty cold. I heard 3 degrees C. At dawn the “rock” started taking shape and its immense size became apparent. We were right in front of it.

After breakfast, we took a walk to some of the aboriginal rock art which was pretty special. Amazing it is still mostly intact. We ended by driving completely around Uluru and saw where people are still allowed to hike to the top. This ends in October. It was too windy for anyone to hike it today. I had decided before I arrived that I would not climb out of respect for the Mala people. I ended the day with a camel ride. My camel was named Smarty Pants. One hour was plenty for, you know, my bum.
